Description:The American Red Cross Santa Cruz County Chapter helps individuals and families recover from, prepare for, and prevent disasters. We also provide other critical community services that are detailed below. Last year the Chapter assisted over 304 individuals affected by disasters and trained more than 4,500 individuals in CPR and first aid. We are an independent, nonprofit organization that depends upon the generosity of our local community for our financial support. We do not receive funds from the American National Red Cross. All funds donated to your local Santa Cruz County Chapter remain here to support the following local programs:

Mission:The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.
Programs:Disaster Services-The Red Cross responds to disasters ranging from local house fires, floods and earthquakes to larger-scale national disasters. Red Cross volunteers provide food, clothing, shelter, and medical assistance as well as mental health counseling for disaster victims and families. We also provide education programs to increase disaster preparedness awareness in the community.

Health & Safety Training-Learning simple first aid techniques could be the difference between life and death for a friend or family member. The Red Cross offers courses in First Aid, CPR, childcare, and water safety. Courses are offered at our chapter facilities and can be taught at different localities for businesses and groups. Last year we trained over 4,500 individuals in CPR and first aid and over 1,700 in water safety programs.

Service to Armed Forces, Military Families and Veterans-The Red Cross serves as the emergency communication link between the Armed Forces and civilian populations, transmitting urgent messages about a family illness, death or emergency situation to service members throughout the world. Last year, the American Red Cross Santa Cruz County Chapter assisted over 100 service men and women and their families.

Blood Services-The American Red Cross collects blood once a week from autologous donors-those who donate blood for themselves before a surgical procedure. Also, directed donors may give blood for family or friends. Last year approximately 500 individuals were either autologous or directed donors in Santa Cruz County and the chapter held 71 local blood drives.

CNA State Certification Testing Program-We regularly test more than 300 individuals who have successfully completed a state-approved Nurse Assistant Training Program. These Certified Nurses Assistants (CNAs) work primarily in residential health care or senior care facilities, helping to fill a critical gap in our county's healthcare needs.

International Humanitarian Services-As a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, our Chapter links the community with other humanitarian organizations worldwide. This collaboration allows us to trace and locate individuals that may have lost communication with their families due to natural disasters, civil unrest, or war. The Chapter raises funds for international disaster relief and response, and occasionally sends local volunteers overseas.
