The Beach Flats Community Center is a family resource center in the heart of the Beach Flats neighborhood. The Community Center has built a bridge between Beach Flat residents and City of Santa Cruz services and social service agencies, provided a neighborhood and community public gathering space in the new Community Center facility as well as facilitating classes and events.

ELIGIBILITY: Primary focus families living in the Beach Flats neighborhood. Open to City of Santa Cruz residents.

stands for "Inspiring and Motivating Academic Growth In our Neighborhood through Education."
and provides quality tutoring for K-12 students in the Beach Flats and Lower Ocean.

In collaboration with Santa Cruz Adult Education we designed and implemented a family coop preschool inside the Beach Flats Community Center.

provides nutrition education classes, gardening opportunities using our local Beach Flats Community Garden and Poet's Park, access to fresh vegetables via the Homeless Garden Project's CSA program, Food What!? CSA, and the Beach Flats Community Garden and Neighborhood Healthy Habits Initiatives.

BARRIOS UNIDOS KIDS CLUB is all about giving kids an alternative to joining gangs.

SANTA CRUZ PUBLIC LIBRARY'S partnership provides Bookmobile visits every other week, fostering lifelong learning and library use and families learn to get information from the bookmobile, from branch libraries and online. Outreach staff has provided a variety of programs over the years including: Stories and crafts at the annual Thanksgiving dinner, Dia de Los Ninos and other community events. Monthly selection of books for the preschools and the homework centers. Regular storytimes, Summer reading programs, visits to the Central Branch Library, Training workshops for homework center volunteers and cooperating on a First 5 grant and producing a CD of stories, songs and sayings.

neighbors come together to organize Community Cleanups, to build parks and plan celebrations, the Community Center has invited the police to participate.
One of the many activities that the center has promoted over the years is participation in the Spanish Citizens Policy Academy to teach people both their rights and responsibilities as engaged citizens.

Project (Believe In Kids' Exercise) is a grassroots movement to give children without a bike, a bicycle of their own for those whose families do not have the financial ability to purchase a bike. Parents who want to participate in the program so a bike can be donated to their child must contact the Bike Dojo. Children must be 5-15 years old to participate.

FAMILY FRIDAY is a chance for families to hang out together in the park, do art, have fun and be creative throughout the summer.

THE BEACH FLATS COMMUNITY GARDEN is open to all City of Santa Cruz residents interested in gardening. Priority is given to community members from Beach Flats and Lower Ocean neighborhoods.

FOOD WHAT!? is a youth empowerment program of Life Lab using food, through sustainable agriculture and health, as the vehicle for bringing about personal growth and transformation.

RAICES DE SANTA CRUZ artistic director, Francisco Jasso of the Mexican Folkloric Ballet is composed of 25 students and Beach Flats residents who practice native dances of Mexico.
