America's longest running contemporary orchestral music festival is held each August at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium (307 Church Street, downtown Santa cruz). Maestro Cristian Macelaru was appointed Music Director in 2017, following in the footsteps of Marin Alsop (1992-2016), John Adams (1991), Dennis Russel Davies (1974-1990), Aaron Copland (1978), Carlos Chavez (1970-1973), and Gerhard Samuel (1963-1968). Established in 1963 in Aptos, CA, the festival includes two full weeks of concerts, open rehearsals, professional education programs, talks with established and early-career composers and musicians, and the following free community events: the Free Family Concert, the Church Street Fair featuring local performing and visual artists and food and wine from local purveyors, and a Creativity Tent for Kids.
