Description:University and community volunteer group in support of the preservation, restoration and interpretation of historic structures associated with the 19th century Cowell Lime Works Historic District on the UC Santa Cruz campus. The district is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Mission:Preservation, restoration and interpretation of historic buildings, lime kilns, and other features in the Cowell Lime Works Historic District.
Programs:Volunteers are solicited to participate in archaeological projects, building restoration and other preservation projects. Group offers occasional guided tours and holds other events.
Equipment:Tools for archaeological and restoration projects are supplied and supervision and direction are provided.
Meetings:Friends Board meets the 1st Tuesday of each month, noon to 2:00 at the UCSC University Relations office at 2155 Delaware Avenue in Santa Cruz.
Publications:Historic District Walking Tour brochure, online and at Campus Admissions Office
Lime Kiln Chronicles newsletter published twice each year online and sent to members
Volunteer Info:All volunteers welcome. Student interns and volunteers participate in a range of preservation projects, including archaeological excavation and restoration of workers' cabins. Interested persons should contact Alisa Klaus, at the phone or email below.
