Description:Blindness is catastrophic to an individual and in many cases sight loss is preventable. Prevent Blindness Northern California (PBNC), a 501(c)(3) organization, provides services to prevent vision impairment. Since 1966, PBNC has screened over 1 million children and adults, connected over 50,000 people to vision care services and certified over 25,000 vision screeners.

FEES: All services are free of charge except for bulk orders of publications and professional education courses.
Mission:Prevent Blindness Northern California is devoted to the preservation of sight for the people of Northern California. We accomplish this through direct vision screening services, vision screening training programs, public education, and advocacy. We believe that detection of vision disorders at a treatable stage and raising awareness of eye health and safety are essential to preventing vision loss and blindness.
Programs:Adult Vision Screening Certification Course includes: how to accurately test visual acuity; how to operate a nonmydriatic fundus camera; when to refer participants on to specialty care; which vision health specialties are appropriate for the individual; how to connect participants who need further evaluation to accessible resources.

Our Children’s Vision Screening Certification Program provides comprehensive training on the latest evidence-based children’s vision screening techniques and how to set up a successful vision screening program that will ensure children in your care receive the vision services they need.

The See Well to Learn™ Eye Bus program is the only program in Northern California to employ an innovative, school‐based approach to accurately detect vision problems among low-income preschoolers, at no cost to the students. Currently the Eye Bus program is serving students in the San Francisco and Oakland school districts and Head Starts. In the coming year, we are aiming to bring this program to other Bay Area school districts and Head Starts.
